From Winter Olympics to No Mans Land

East (Ottoman/ Turkish) meets West (Western Europe).  North (Communism) meets South (Mediterranean).  Muslim, Orthodox, Catholic churches & Jewish places of worship all alongside each other; a city with a unique, historical, ethical, cultural and religious diversity

The outskirts of the city -

- how did we manage to find our little guest house?

Our room across the road From the Havtat

View from our balcony across the old town (Bascarsijska). Lovely as the lights came on the mosques with the sunset prayer call

Waiting for our guide - a little light reading - the massacre at Srebrenica (click on this photo for a link)

We took the bus up to the hill outside the town to the old city gate & Jayce Castle

The village where our guide grew up. Trees cut down to the front line where the Serbs were shelling.

Bombed out parliament building

The city of Sarajevo

Then city surrounded by mountains - so easy to cut off

Mens slalom slope - winter Olympics 1984 - now out of bounds because of mines. Gondola destroyed

It speaks for itself

Our guide made Karina cry as he told us of the horrors of the siege whilst we were walking the old streets of Sarajevo

Over 11,000 killed during the 4 year siege including 1500 children
